Taking the Transitions approach into the workplace

Transitions College is delighted to extend our specialist SEND provision into Northallerton through our Supported Internship programme.

We understand that every young person is different. Our approach focuses on identifying each intern's strengths, interests, aspirations and support needs and using these to create meaningful opportunities in the workplace.

Our ultimate goal is simple: to help young people develop the confidence, skills and experience they need to move towards sustainable paid employment and a fulfilling adult life.

 What is a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internship is a structured, work-based study programme for young people aged 16–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who want to move into employment but may need additional support to do so.

A Supported Internship is a structured, work-based study programme for young people aged 16–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who want to move into employment but may need additional support to do so.

Unlike a traditional college programme, the majority of learning takes place within real workplaces.

Alongside workplace learning, interns continue to develop relevant English and Maths skills and wider Employability skills.

Interns are supported to develop practical employment skills, confidence and independence while gaining meaningful experience with local employers.

Looking to the future

Employment is only one part of adulthood.

Our wider Transitions ethos remains central to the Northallerton programme, with young people supported to develop skills across the Preparing for Adulthood areas.

Learning is designed to be meaningful and functional wherever possible, connecting classroom learning directly to everyday life and the workplace.

We recognise that moving from education into employment can be a significant transition. Our team works alongside each young person to make that transition achievable, positive and purposeful.
